Up, up and away

It's a city of half a million, and there were reportedly 150k visitors. Everyone went. Even the Little Old Lady who lived in a shoe came to the Labor Day Lift Off.  Photo by Kassondra Cloos

Colorado Springs had a huge balloon festival Labor Day weekend and it was gorgeous. I'd never seen anything like it before.

The sun hits the translucent balloons as pilots inflate them with fans and flames and pretty much everyone is constantly smiling and laughing and happy. The balloons are so colorful, and so graceful. Everyone is a photographer at the balloon festival, including me, and including two-year-old children who giggle as they take shots of their parents with DSLRs bigger than their faces. Everyone, even spectators, is a part of the spectacle.

I'm not entirely sure what it was that I expected. It's all just so happy. I don't know how else to explain it. It's just great.
